GREAT PLACE TO STAY. The park is under new management so there is no reason to consider the older reviews. The onsite management is as nice as could be found anywhere. Park is in good shape with a nice bathhouse a fun little play ground. We had a large group that needed 3 cars all parked at our site with no issues.
We stayed here for 3 days on Row H - no sewer hookup. This place is over-rated on another travel website. It appears that the owners offer a chance at a drawing for a free night camping if the customers post a review. Apparently, the customer feels that a better rating will increase their chances at getting the freebie. The campground us about ten miles from Salida. It is dirty and trashy. The bath house / restrooms are average (reviews claimed "extremely clean."). Average at best.
First things first. There is nearly no shade. If that is important to you, there it is. Now, Heart of the Rockies is a very nice park. Restrooms/Showers are free and clean. That is a huge plus. There is a pay laundry on site. The site was level (even though the whole park is hillside). The hookups were close, and the fire ring and picnic table were nice. Wood and ice are available on site and it is not priced at a premium (ice is high everywhere in Colorado). The staff was friendly. This was a huge plus as we originally were going to stay up the road and had reservations and confirmations but they ignored our reservation or something and Heart of the Rockies was more than accommodating at the last minute. They quite literally saved our vacation. The rude guy so many have complained about is apparently no longer there as the park is under new managment. We spoke to a very nice lady, her name escapes me, but the maintenance person was also very cordial.
This is a great spot in a beautiful part of the earth! The staff is so accommodating especially Josh who helped me so graciously with a spare tire issue. Loved the cold stream running thru the park as much as the dogs. A little peace heaven for sure.
This place was pretty cool. Don't let the 4 stars make you think this was not a good place. There was a lot of RV camping but they were segregated from the tent camping by some trees and a small stream. The whole campsite was very chill and relaxed. The showers were not bad and neither was the rest of the place. The campsite price was fair as well. But I wish the campsites could have had just a little bit more shade. Some had none at all. I was fortunate to have mine. Try to get up by the stream. That's where the shade is.
